Waiver to Eat Cheeseburger at a Toronto Hotel Restaurant
A recent incident at a Toronto Airport Hotel gained attention when a U.S. customer ordered a cheeseburger cooked medium and was asked to sign a waiver.
The customer shared their experience on Reddit’s Toronto page, including a photo of the meal and the accompanying waiver. The waiver stated that the guest waives any claims against the hotel for liabilities and damages, including foodborne illnesses, arising from the guest’s use of their own food or non-provided products.
A spokesperson for the hotel clarified to the Toronto Sun that while waivers aren’t typically required, the hotel follows Ontario’s food safety laws diligently.
The spokesperson explained, “When guests request a cooking temperature below the minimum required, we provide a waiver as an additional food-safety measure, consistent with disclaimers found on restaurant menus.”
Ontario’s food-safety guide recommends cooking ground beef to 71 degrees Celsius to ensure thorough cooking and reduce the risk of bacterial survival.
The hotel plans to add a disclaimer to its restaurant menus and discontinue the use of waivers in response to the incident.
