A New Era for The Vineyard: Apex Hotels Acquires Berkshire Icon After 26 Years of Family Ownership
After nearly three decades under Sir Peter Michael’s family, The Vineyard in Berkshire is transitioning to new ownership with Apex Hotels, marking the end of an era. Known for its wine connections and five-star luxury, the hotel will join Apex’s growing collection of country house properties.
A Storied Legacy: The Vineyard’s 26-Year Journey Under the Michael Family
For 26 years, The Vineyard in Berkshire has been synonymous with luxury, fine wine, and culinary excellence. Opened in 1998 by Sir Peter Michael, the five-AA-star hotel near Newbury quickly established a reputation rooted in its deep connection to the wine industry. With a stunning collection of 30,000 bottles and 3,000 bins, The Vineyard’s wine cellar has long been a destination for oenophiles. This legacy was enhanced through the Michael family’s involvement with their own Peter Michael Winery in California, creating a unique transatlantic wine relationship. Over the years, notable sommeliers such as Romain Bourger—winner of the Wine and Spirit Ambassador award at the 2023 Cateys—have shaped the hotel’s reputation in the world of fine wine.
The family’s personal investment extended beyond the hotel’s wines. In 2022, under the leadership of executive chef Tom Scade, The Vineyard launched a Michelin Key-winning tasting menu restaurant, further cementing its standing as a culinary destination. Two generations of Sir Peter Michael’s family have poured their hearts into the hotel, nurturing its transformation into a beacon of luxury and refined hospitality.
Passing the Torch: Apex Hotels Takes Over
As the Michael family turns their focus toward other ventures—such as the Post Barn at Donnington Valley Hotel, which specializes in weddings and events—they have chosen to pass the baton to Apex Hotels. The Edinburgh-based hotel group, known for its excellence in hospitality, will acquire The Vineyard as part of its strategic expansion into rural and country house locations. This sale follows Apex’s recent acquisition of Pine Trees in Pitlochry and Meldrum House Country Hotel and Golf Course in Aberdeenshire, bringing their total number of country properties to three.
Apex Hotels was founded in 1996 by Norman Springford, and under his leadership, the company has grown to encompass 11 hotels across the UK, eight of which are based in city centers. Now, with The Vineyard’s addition to its portfolio, Apex aims to blend its renowned urban hospitality expertise with the charm of rural destinations.
For Apex, the acquisition is a natural extension of its brand ethos. As a family-run business, the hotel group respects the legacy built by the Michael family. Angela Vickers, Apex’s chief executive, praised the dedication and passion that went into The Vineyard’s success: “We have huge respect for what Sir Peter Michael and his family have achieved at The Vineyard over the years. As a family business ourselves, we understand the dedication, hard work, and passion required to create a venue of this caliber.”
The Future Under New Ownership
While the transfer of ownership signals change, the spirit of The Vineyard is set to continue. Managing director Andrew McKenzie, who has been at the helm since the hotel’s opening, reflected on the emotional weight of the transition: “The family and I have lived and breathed The Vineyard for over 26 years, so this will be a huge wrench. We will miss our many regular guests, but even more so, our fantastic team.” However, McKenzie expressed confidence in Apex’s stewardship, saying that their excellent reputation for running hotels and caring for their staff provides great comfort.
As for Sir Peter Michael, he and his wife, Maggie, are confident in the next chapter for the hotel they nurtured into a world-class establishment. “We look forward to continuing to enjoy this special place under new ownership and wish Apex Hotels and the Springford family as much joy and success as we have witnessed over many years,” Sir Peter commented.
Apex’s Expansion Strategy
The acquisition of The Vineyard follows Apex Hotels’ ambitious plans for growth, particularly in rural and country house locations. In August 2023, the group secured a £60 million refinancing package to support its expansion efforts, demonstrating its commitment to diversifying its portfolio. The acquisition of properties like The Vineyard allows Apex to cater to guests seeking refined rural getaways while continuing to dominate in city-center hospitality.
The Vineyard sale, brokered by Colliers on behalf of the Michael family, is set to complete in mid-November. As the hotel moves into a new chapter, its rich heritage and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly continue under Apex’s leadership.
Looking Ahead: A Legacy That Endures
The sale of The Vineyard marks a pivotal moment in its history, but the core elements that have made it a beloved destination will remain intact. The hotel’s ties to wine, its exceptional service, and its culinary offerings will continue to thrive under the Apex Hotels banner. Meanwhile, the Michael family shifts focus to their new ventures, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the heart of Berkshire.
For guests, the transition offers a blend of continuity and new experiences. As Apex Hotels adds its signature touch, guests can expect a seamless blend of The Vineyard’s established charm with fresh innovations that will ensure its place as one of the premier luxury hotels in the region for years to come.
