Tripadvisor Enhances User Experience with In-App Hotel Bookings
Tripadvisor is taking a significant step toward enhancing user engagement by launching a new feature that allows hotel bookings directly within its app. This development comes in partnership with Hopper Technology Solutions (HTS), a move aimed at integrating the travel planning process into one seamless platform. Announced on the same day as Tripadvisor’s modest second-quarter revenue increase of 1%, this initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to deepen user involvement and increase monetization.
The launch of in-app hotel bookings is designed to create a more cohesive experience for Tripadvisor members. Previously, the app allowed users to book experiences, explore restaurants, and discover things to do. Now, with the addition of hotel bookings, users can plan their entire trip without leaving the app, which is expected to increase user engagement and, consequently, revenue. Tripadvisor’s President, Kristen Dalton, emphasized that this new feature is crucial for enhancing the overall user journey, making the app an “essential tool” for members who are looking to do more with the platform.
HTS, known for its robust travel technology solutions, will power the hotel booking process, managing inventory and providing customer support. This collaboration allows Tripadvisor to focus on delivering a superior user experience while HTS handles the technical and operational aspects. The service is available exclusively to logged-in Tripadvisor members, reinforcing the company’s focus on building value through its free membership program.
This new feature is a strategic move for Tripadvisor, aligning with CEO Matt Goldberg’s vision of driving “deeper engagement” with users. By offering more integrated and valuable services, Tripadvisor aims to shift from low-value, fly-by traffic to more meaningful interactions that lead to higher-value transactions. The goal is to increase average revenue per user by keeping travelers engaged on the platform throughout their entire journey, from planning to booking and beyond.
Looking ahead, Tripadvisor sees this as a low-risk way to re-enter the direct booking space, following its earlier experiments with “Instant Booking.” The partnership with HTS provides a scalable solution without requiring major investments or complex negotiations with individual hotels. This strategy not only strengthens Tripadvisor’s position in the travel industry but also opens up new opportunities for growth as the company continues to innovate and adapt to the evolving needs of modern travelers.
As Tripadvisor continues to refine its approach, the company is focused on building for the future, with a clear emphasis on increasing user engagement, enhancing the user experience, and driving sustainable growth in revenue and profitability. This new in-app booking feature is just one of the many steps Tripadvisor is taking to solidify its role as a trusted, comprehensive travel platform.
